Lung Cancer Risks Rise With Nanoparticles

Research on the cause of lung cancer has been one of exhaustive studies. Much research in recent years has attempted to answer the question of why some individuals whom share similar traits, such as smokers, develop lung cancer, while others from the same cohort do not. Some studies have indicated (continued...)

The Dangers of tobacco smoking

The Dangers of tobacco smoking

Tobacco smoking is the primary cause of preventable death in the world. Every year, thousands of Americans are diagnosed with lung cancer that was brought about specifically from smoking. Most smokers are bombarded with reasons to quit smoking every day, and there are hundreds of stop smoking tips, quit smoking aids and quit smoking support groups. However, none of the ways to quit smoking can work for you if you are not ready to give up your habit. Knowing what tobacco smoking does to you can help you make up your mind to begin your trek toward a healthier life.

People Should Smoking Stop Why? Faith can move mountains...

Tobacco smoking is perhaps the worst thing you could do to your body. There have been a variety of studies that demonstrate that smoking shortens your life by six minutes for every cigarette you smoke. When you think about this in terms of packs a day, you are shortening your life by two hours for every pack of cigarettes you smoke. That is quite a forgoing to make just for smoking.

A person with some doubt but taking action is better than one with no doubt taking no action. Michael E. Angier

Another argument to quit tobacco smoking is that it is costly. Cigarette prices are always on the rise as more and more sin taxes are added. In states such as New York, one pack of cigarettes can cost more than seven dollars. If you add up all of that money, a pack a day smoker could save more than two thousand dollars a year if he or she quit smoking.

Poisons Under Your Sink: Hidden Dangers of Cleaning Products

The American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) has recorded many exposures to household cleaning substances that were serious enough to require treatment in a health care facility. Incredibly, according to the AAPCC the largest number of occurrences of poisoning in 1993 were due to cleaning products - drain cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners, bleach, soaps and detergents.

One Million poisonings in Canada each year are due to household cleaner ingestion. Some are fatal. Thousands of children and adults are permanently disfigured or injured through contact with chemicals in the home each year.

Our pets are also at risk. Animals that don't have access to clean, fresh water are more likely to drink out of puddles, gutters, toilet bowls, or any old container left sitting around with a liquid in it. Even though my cats always have access to clean water in a bowl, they seem to prefer the toilet, the sink, the bathtub, or even a basin with cleaning solution in it.

Here is an alphabetical list of some of the most hazardous cleansers found around the house:

AIR FRESHENERS: interfere with your ability to smell by releasing nerve-deadening agents or coating nasal passages with an oil film, usually methoxychlor, a pesticide that accumulates in fat cells. Known toxic chemicals found in an air freshener are formaldehyde, a highly toxic, known carcinogen, and phenol. When phenol touches your skin it can cause it to swell, burn, peel, and break out in hives.

AMMONIA: is a very volatile chemical and is very damaging to your eyes, (continued...)

Asthma and Your Household Environment

At first reading, there isn't much extremely shocking in this report. But with a little research, in my opinion it becomes alarming.

This information comes from the Asthma Society of Canada:

"Doctors define asthma as a 'chronic inflammatory disease of the airways' . It is one of the most prevalent chronic conditions affecting Canadians. Asthma can be diagnosed at any age, but often starts in childhood. Its prevalence in Canada has been increasing over the last 20 years and it is estimated that currently over 3 million Canadians have asthma.

"The three strongest risk factors for developing asthma are family history, exposure in infancy to high levels of antigens such as house dust mites, and exposure to tobacco smoke and/or chemical irritants.

"We're all pretty familiar with allergic triggers of asthmatic symptoms, such as mould, animal dander, pollen, dust mites, etc., but perhaps less familiar with non-allergic triggers such as certain drugs, chemicals, fumes and odours, respiratory viral infections, certain weather conditions, strenuous physical exercise, tobacco smoke, and air pollution.

"Urbanization appears to be correlated with an increase in asthma. The nature of the risk is unclear because studies have not taken into account indoor allergens although these have been identified as significant risk factors.

"Experts are struggling to understand why prevalence rates world-wide are, on average, rising by 50% every decade."

Alarming? Yes. Why?

First of all, the report was updated (continued...)

Asbestos and Mesothelioma Health Threats

Asbestos and Occupational Respiratory Diseases

Could your job be making you sick? For too many workers, that's a real danger. The air they breathe on the job is a health hazard. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), occupationally-related airway diseases, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

(COPD), pose a significant public health threat. CDC says nearly 30 percent of COPD and adult asthma may be attributable to occupational exposure and more than 20 million U.S. workers are exposed to substances that can cause airway diseases.

Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (primarily chronic bronchitis and emphysema) are diseases of the lung airways. CDC says both diseases can be brought on by exposure to irritants in the workplace. In addition, many workers are unaware that pre-existing asthma and COPD may be worsened by the work environment.

On-the-job hazards

What kind of irritants are we talking about? Here's are some examples, compiled from CDC, the American Lung Association (ALA), and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP):

* Asbestos was commonly used as an insulator and fire retardant until scientists discovered that asbestos fibers are deadly, potentially causing asbestosis ( scarring of lung tissues) and lung cancer. Workers most at risk of asbestos exposure include those in mining, construction, demolition, shipyards, tiling, electrical insulation, and paving, among other industries. ALA says it can be years between exposure to asbestos (continued...)
